Chemical laboratory based role providing synthetic support to our R&D projects as instructed by the line manager/project manager. In particular, work is focused on supply and development of standard monomers, key intermediates, oligomers and research polymers. Functional responsibilities include assisting with the day-to-day smooth running of the laboratories.
KEY RESULT AREAS
- Successful synthesis and characterisation of key intermediates, existing core monomer systems using deviations to standard literature techniques and reactions.
- Development and successful synthesis of new and existing polymer systems.
- Accurate recording of all practical work to ensure new Intellectual Property is appropriately documented.
- Communication with all team members to ensure results are communicated effectively and problem areas are highlighted early on.
- Safe working in accordance with CDT’s health and safety policy and procedures.
- To maintain a well-functioning laboratory.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
- Follow scientific procedures and protocols.
- Perform simple synthetic organic chemistry transformations.
- Preparation of monomers and polymers to a high standard, to agreed timescales and with high quality documentation and reporting.
- Full characterization of all monomers and intermediates prepared.
- Draft studies with appropriate data as instructed by line manager.
- Maintain supply of standard monomers and key intermediates to specified standards and scale.
- Confident working on both small and large laboratory scales as appropriate.
- Communicate effectively with synthetic chemists and material scientists, as well as the broader company.
- Responsibility for maintaining a tidy and efficient laboratory environment and for ensuring health and safety standards are met and maintained.
- A good track record of safe working in a laboratory environment, perform COSHH assessments for all chemical processes.
- Functional maintenance.
KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Line manager to agree program of work and for professional development support.
- Liaising with scientists at all levels and purchasing officer to ensure smooth running of the laboratory.
- Effective communication with Material Scientists over analytical interpretation of results.
- Project team provide regular updates on agreed work program.
- Liaise with chemist’s to develop knowledge base and discuss ideas.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
- Degree or equivalent in Chemistry is a necessity.
- Evidence of organic or polymer practical laboratory experience.
- An ability to learn quickly and work independently with minimum supervision
- Accurately follow synthetic procedures.
- A very tidy, organised and accurate style is essential to ensure efficient and safe working in the busy laboratory environment, keeping accurate and traceable records.
- Ability to work on several batches of work simultaneously without loss of efficiency or productivity.
- Ability to be flexible and able to change priorities at short notice
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Good time management
- Computer literacy is essential. Familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office products and chemical drawing packages will be advantageous.
- Strong communication skills
- Must have strong team-playing skills and the ability to operate in multi-disciplinary/cross-functional team.
- Knowledge of analytical techniques to enable full characterization of all materials.
- The role includes reporting results to internal groups.
- Maintain confidentiality of CDT data.
