1  JOB PURPOSE
 
  The Technical Assistant will support research leading to the understanding and further development of organic electronic devices (OEDs), including organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) and organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs). Working closely with Scientists in the team, the varied, hands-on lab-based role will include supporting development of new fabrication processes, assessing novel functional materials and investigating new device architectures. 

2  KEY RESULT AREAS
 
·  Fabricate and characterise OEDs using appropriate techniques, in collaboration with the Scientists in the team, following standard procedures when appropriate.
·  Characterise the properties of new materials following standard protocols, devising new characterisation methods when appropriate, and communicating results with the whole team.
·  Work with Scientists in the team to devise and carry out other experiments to develop high performance organic electronic devices, especially OTFTs, through device optimisation and understanding of the processes that limit performance.
·  Support the work of the whole SIG device team and smooth the running of laboratory areas used by the team by maintaining supplies of consumables and helping to maintaining a clean and efficient working environment.
·  Continuous communication with all members of the team to discuss technical issues, progress and plans.
·  Actively participate in activities to expand CDT’s Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio.
·  Maintain a culture of health and safety within the laboratory.

3  MAIN ACTIVITIES


·  Fabricate devices in CDT’s Cleanroom facilities following standard procedures where appropriate, following good Cleanroom working practice.
·  Characterise these devices using the relevant equipment and work with Scientists to develop novel measurement techniques and systems to improve understanding and throughput.
·  Characterise new materials produced by CDT Chemists, external partners and collaborators using a wide range of standard and novel techniques.
·  Analyse results and draw conclusions discussing them with LM, writing reports when necessary.
·  Keep careful records of all laboratory work to ensure control and traceability.
·  Identify new approaches and architectures for novel organic electronic devices that will expand CDT’s IP portfolio and potentially contribute to future revenues.
·  Attend regular group meetings and be prepared to discuss results and contribute fully to discussions.
·  Liaise with other technical teams within CDT to maintain awareness of developments and contribute as appropriate.
·  Develop and maintain equipment for characterisation of the properties of OEDs.
·  Maintain an awareness of the requirements for commercialisation of new technologies, including the complexity of processing and issues involved in production.
·  Communicate effectively across the scientific disciplines at CDT to promote internal discussion and move the technology forward.
·  Generate and keep records of new Intellectual Property.
·  Prepare and deliver presentations when required.

4  KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS


·  Work closely with other members of the Strategic Innovations Group.
·  Work closely with members of the chemistry group involved in developing new materials and with technical teams throughout CDT.
·  Maintain a close working relationship with the Research & Development Support (RADS) team, assisting with transfer of standard processes.
·  Take an active interest in CDT’s core LED work, so that knowledge developed for LEDs is transferred effectively to the OTFT activities when appropriate, and vice versa.


5  KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED


·  Degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science or related subject.
·  Experience in the fields of polymer or molecular electronics, and/or thin film transistors would be advantageous.
·  Enthusiastic, inventive and an aptitude for experimental work is essential.
·  Good problem-solving skills.
·  An ability to maintain confidentially of highly sensitive data.

Chemical laboratory based role providing synthetic support to our R&D projects as instructed by the line manager/project manager. In particular, work is focused on supply and development of standard monomers, key intermediates, oligomers and research polymers. Functional responsibilities include assisting with the day-to-day smooth running of the laboratories.

 

KEY RESULT AREAS

 

1.  Successful synthesis and characterisation of key intermediates, existing core monomer systems using deviations to standard literature techniques and reactions.
2.  Development and successful synthesis of new and existing polymer systems.
3.  Accurate recording of all practical work to ensure new Intellectual Property is appropriately documented.
4.  Communication with all team members to ensure results are communicated effectively and problem areas are highlighted early on.
5.  Safe working in accordance with CDT’s health and safety policy and procedures.
6.  To maintain a well-functioning laboratory.

 

 
3  MAIN ACTIVITIES

 

1.  Follow scientific procedures and protocols.
2.  Perform simple synthetic organic chemistry transformations.
3.  Preparation of monomers and polymers to a high standard, to agreed timescales and with high quality documentation and reporting.
4.  Full characterization of all monomers and intermediates prepared.
5.  Draft studies with appropriate data as instructed by line manager.
6.  Maintain supply of standard monomers and key intermediates to specified standards and scale.
7.  Confident working on both small and large laboratory scales as appropriate.
8.  Communicate effectively with synthetic chemists and material scientists, as well as the broader company.

1.  Responsibility for maintaining a tidy and efficient laboratory environment and for ensuring health and safety standards are met and maintained.
2.  A good track record of safe working in a laboratory environment, perform COSHH assessments for all chemical processes.

  • Line manager to agree program of work and for professional development support.
  • Liaising with scientists at all levels and purchasing officer to ensure smooth running of the laboratory.
  • Effective communication with Material Scientists over analytical interpretation of results.

  • Liaise with chemist’s to develop knowledge base and discuss ideas.


5  KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Degree or equivalent in Chemistry is a necessity.
  • Evidence of organic or polymer practical laboratory experience.
  • An ability to learn quickly and work independently with minimum supervision
  • Accurately follow synthetic procedures.
  • A very tidy, organised and accurate style is essential to ensure efficient and safe working in the busy laboratory environment, keeping accurate and traceable records.
  • Ability to work on several batches of work simultaneously without loss of efficiency or productivity.
  • Ability to be flexible and able to change priorities at short notice
·  Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Good time management
  • Computer literacy is essential. Familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office products and chemical drawing packages will be advantageous.
